Introduction

Puncharoo spent a long time on my bench. Its punches looked fun, but short range and slow charge time made every safer Horde carry feel easier to justify. The latest damage buff gave me a reason to pull the Rock kangaroo line back out.

The surprise was not one giant punch. It was Puncharoo's Lv.5 counter. When I paired that counter with Hyphoria's ally-damaging spores, Puncharoo kept entering Evade and brief Invincibility while throwing extra punches. A T2 copy with zero food levels reached 189 million damage in one difficulty 2 run. That was enough to outdamage a fed T3 Unicorn carry on the same board.

This is my working counter build, not a settled best team. The 749 and 748 kill scores give Puncharoo a real Horde job, but difficulty 2 is not a universal answer.

Quick answer

T2 Puncharoo is worth trying when your Horde formation can keep it near the frontline and inside Hyphoria's spore ring. Raise Puncharoo to temporary Lv.5 as soon as the board allows it. Each incoming hit then has a chance to trigger a counter, Evade, and a brief Invincibility window.

Hyphoria's Peaking Ring slightly damages allies while giving them attack speed and damage reduction. Those friendly ticks count as hits for Puncharoo's Lv.5 effect. Lullelly's HP drain does not, so the Jellyfish cannot replace Hyphoria here. Puncharoo also needs a ranged partner for Worms and distant bosses.

Which kangaroo form am I using?

The unit in these runs was T2 Puncharoo, the middle form between Joeyo and T3 Kangachamp. I had no food levels invested in it.

Puncharoo's Knockabout charges when no enemy is in reach. A longer charge raises its damage and area, while a full charge adds Fragile. Kangachamp treats every fifth attack as fully charged.

Horde temporary levels add the parts that made my T2 useful:

  • Lv.3 adds a chance for a Shadow Punch that deals area damage.
  • Lv.5 adds the counter, Evade, and brief Invincibility after Puncharoo takes a hit.
  • Lv.7 throws punches around the nearby battlefield and ends with a large area finisher.

Lv.5 is my first target. I buy Lv.7 only after the rest of the board covers its lanes.

What changed in my damage results

| Run | Puncharoo setup | Result | Damage check | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Single Puncharoo | T2, zero food levels | 749 kills on difficulty 2 | 127M, beside a fed T3 Rockong at 129M | | Double Puncharoo | T2, zero food levels | 748 kills on difficulty 2 | 189M, ahead of a fed T3 Unicorn carry |

The first number needs context. My Puncharoo did almost nothing until the Sandworm moved it forward around wave 15. Rockong already had roughly a 31 million lead before Puncharoo reached a useful punching position. By wave 24, Puncharoo had nearly caught it.

The second setup left a lane open so both players moved Puncharoo into danger. That is backwards for a normal carry, yet it is the point here. We stood in front of laser bosses and let Lv.5 turn steady hits into counters.

Neither score was a full clear. The first run left one low-health boss, and the second team lacked enough investment to finish. The damage proves the counter loop works. It does not promise a clear at every difficulty.

Why Hyphoria activates the build

Hyphoria's Peaking Ring covers a large diamond around the Mushroom. Enemies inside take spore damage and Fragile. Allies receive attack speed and damage reduction, but the spores also deal light friendly damage.

That last part is normally a drawback. Puncharoo turns it into another counter trigger.

I saw friendly ticks around 131 and 186 damage hit Puncharoo. After Lv.5 activated, later ticks displayed zero during Invincibility. Extra punches appeared in front of Hyphoria because the friendly hit came from that position. Enemies near the Mushroom turned those free punches into useful damage.

I put Hyphoria close enough for the ring to cover Puncharoo after it moves forward, with healing on the same cluster. Friendly ticks still punish a weak board even with Hyphoria's damage reduction.

Lullelly failed this job in the same setup. Sapping Orb drains HP from healthy allies, yet that drain did not register as a damaging hit for Puncharoo's counter. Use Lullelly for its own damage and healing job, not as the engine for this build.

My Puncharoo Horde formation skeleton

I build around jobs instead of copying every slot from one run:

  1. Put one Puncharoo on each side of the active front when both players own it. One copy works for a cheaper version.
  2. Place Hyphoria where Peaking Ring reaches the kangaroo position and the busiest frontline cluster.
  3. Use one Ashlarva for healing and attack support. Its balance reduction did not remove its job.
  4. Add a ranged carry for Worms and distant bosses. A Unicorn, Rockong, Budboo, Fishopus, or another developed long-range attacker fits.
  5. Keep the normal Horde support jobs: Sunfleur for sustain, Sonarbat for the cross-board damage setup, Tideon for Fragile, and a Weaken or control slot where the late waves demand it.

One empty movement lane helped more than another crowded attacker. I slid Puncharoo in front of a laser boss, took repeated hits, and fired counters into the same lane. When the frontline became unsafe, I pulled it back into Hyphoria's healing cluster.

Puncharoo still deals its best damage at close range. Once I retreat, a Worm beyond its fists wastes the slot. The ranged carry prevents that stall. My 35-wave Horde boss map shows which late boss needs the backup.

How I play each phase

Early on, I save currency and build support. Puncharoo stays safe before Lv.5. Hyphoria, healing, and one ranged attacker come first.

At Lv.5, I move Puncharoo into a busy lane for frequent, survivable hits. Boss lasers produce repeated counter chances. Damage reduction and healing must keep pace.

At Lv.7, I move near several enemies for the surrounding punches and final area hit. I check Hyphoria's ring after every move; one bad tile removes the friendly trigger and both buffs.

Late in the run, I let the ranged carry finish distant targets and move Puncharoo only when a boss enters punching range. The two-player Horde formation guide covers the Sonarbat and support jobs around this counter core.

Mistakes that killed my runs

Hiding Puncharoo from every hit

Lv.5 needs incoming damage. A protected back tile keeps Puncharoo alive but wastes the reason to bring it.

Taking damage without support

The goal is repeated small hits and Invincibility. An underhealed Puncharoo produces a short spike followed by an empty tile.

Replacing Hyphoria with Lullelly

HP drain and friendly damage do not use the same trigger. Lullelly did not activate the counter loop.

Forgetting the range problem

Puncharoo caught Rockong after a slow start, yet it still failed to reach a distant final boss. Keep one serious ranged attacker.

Calling difficulty 2 the final verdict

The damage earns more runs, not a finished Meta label. I will judge the next version by harder clears rather than one large number.

My verdict after the buff

Puncharoo is no longer an automatic bench unit for me. A zero-food T2 copy produced 127M after an idle first half. The 189M double-Puncharoo run changed my upgrade queue.

I still will not build a Horde team with only short-range damage. Puncharoo needs Hyphoria, healing, an active lane, and a ranged finisher. With all four, Lv.5 supplies defense and damage. Miss one and the old weakness returns fast.

For accounts that already own Hyphoria and a stable support shell, T2 is enough to run this experiment before paying for Kangachamp. That is a much cheaper question to answer than feeding the line first and hoping the punches work later.

FAQ

Is Puncharoo good in Horde Invasion after the buff?

Yes, when Puncharoo reaches temporary Lv.5 and fights in an active frontline position. A zero-food T2 copy reached 127M and 189M damage in two difficulty 2 runs.

Why does Hyphoria work with Puncharoo?

Hyphoria's spores slightly damage allies. Those hits can trigger Puncharoo's Lv.5 counter, Evade, and brief Invincibility while also giving attack speed and damage reduction.

Does Lullelly trigger Puncharoo's counter?

No. Lullelly drains HP rather than dealing a normal damaging hit, so it did not activate the Lv.5 counter interaction.

Do I need T3 Kangachamp for this build?

No. The recorded runs used T2 Puncharoo with zero food levels. Kangachamp adds a fully charged fifth attack, but T2 already has the Horde counter loop.

Where should I place Puncharoo?

Place it inside Hyphoria's spore coverage and near a lane with frequent survivable hits. Keep one lane open so Puncharoo can move in front of bosses, then retreat into healing when the pressure rises.
