My cheap Poakie sleep loop reached 969 Horde kills

My low-cost Poakie Horde Invasion build uses Lv.7 Lava Oil and Waveflutter Sleep to control waves, reach 969 kills, and delay an expensive T3 upgrade.

Introduction

My Horde Invasion problem was simple: enemies kept walking through the control zone before my damage finished them. Adding another expensive T3 carry meant more stars, more food, and another fight over the same resources. Poakie offered a cheaper experiment.

The result surprised me. A T2 Poakie at D food quality stayed close enough to a much better developed T3 Monkey to matter. Poakie did 261 million damage in the final run, while the Monkey reached 331 million. My teammate's T3 Poakie finished at 282 million. The team stopped at 969 kills, below our established 1,015-kill ceiling, but far above the usual result from a barely fed frog doing a side job.

Damage was only half the reason the build worked. Poakie's Lv.7 Lava Oil covered the front of the map with repeated damage, Burn, Slow, and an ending explosion. Those repeated hits triggered Waveflutter's Sleep setup. Enemies stepped into the oil, slowed down, fell asleep, woke into more damage, and often went straight back into the same mess.

This is my Poakie Horde Invasion build for players who need a working control loop before they own every fashionable T3. After this 969-kill test, I expanded the same control engine into a no-T4 1,000-kill boss-focus build with Budboo, Fishopus, Beetle control, and active lane swaps.

My quick verdict

I use this build when I have a T3 Waveflutter, at least one Poakie, and enough Horde upgrades to reach Poakie's Lv.7 oil skill. Poakie can still contribute at T1 or T2 because the combo depends more on repeated oil damage triggering Sleep than on winning a clean damage race by itself.

This is not the best Horde Invasion team. My test reached 969 kills, while the established formation had already reached about 1,015 on suitably invested accounts. That gap matters. This build is a strong low-investment route, a useful second option, and a lot more entertaining than watching the same five pieces run every event.

My short recommendation is:

  1. Build the Waveflutter Sleep engine first.
  2. Add Poakie as the repeated-hit trigger and secondary AoE damage.
  3. Reach Poakie Lv.7 during the run as soon as the team can survive the early waves.
  4. Place the oil where bosses and fast Zobos must cross it.
  5. Upgrade to T3 only after the T1 or T2 version proves the formation works on my account.

That last point saves resources. T3 improves Poakie's normal attack coverage, but Lava Oil already gives the lower evolution forms a job.

Why the Lava Oil and Sleep loop works

Waveflutter is the piece that turns scattered damage ticks into control. The current Tatari list on the community wiki describes Waveflutter's damage setup this way: damage from Waveflutter and nearby allies applies Slow, which can upgrade into Sleep. The exact positioning still depends on the live Horde board, but the interaction explains why a large damage-over-time area is useful.

Poakie's oil supplies many chances to trigger that effect. At Lv.7 in Horde Invasion, it spreads a broad, heart-shaped field toward the front. Enemies on the field take continuous oil damage and Burn damage. They also receive Slow, then take an explosion when the effect finishes. With Waveflutter covering Poakie or the relevant damage area, those hits can keep feeding Sleep.

I do not need Poakie to land one enormous attack. I need it to keep touching every enemy that enters the choke point. A boss that takes one hit can keep walking. A boss standing in oil takes another check, then another Burn tick, then another chance for the Sleep setup to interrupt its movement.

That creates a useful chain:

  1. Poakie places Lava Oil across the approach.
  2. A Zobo enters the field and receives Slow.
  3. Continuous damage and Burn keep triggering the Waveflutter setup.
  4. Sleep stops or delays the Zobo inside the danger area.
  5. The rest of the team gets more time to deal damage.

The final report reads like a damage combo, but I judge the build by how long enemies remain trapped near the front. The extra seconds protect the Tatarigami and let the main carry keep attacking. If the Sleep chain breaks and the whole pack crosses the map, a pretty Poakie damage number will not rescue the run.

What T2 Poakie proved in the test

The supplied test was not a fair stat comparison, which makes the result more useful in one specific way. Poakie had weaker development than the main Monkey carry.

My T2 Poakie had about 124K attack and only D food quality. The Monkey had a higher star level, better food quality, and T3 evolution. Poakie also received help from the Bat damage boost and another support buff, so the report does not measure isolated unit strength. Horde reports never live in a vacuum.

During an earlier checkpoint, the T2 Poakie showed 218 million damage against the Monkey's 247 million. At the final 969-kill result, the report showed:

  • T3 Monkey, with higher stars and food investment: 331 million.
  • My teammate's T3 Poakie, with wider normal AoE: 282 million.
  • My T2 Poakie, at D food quality and about 124K attack: 261 million.
  • The Deer damage slot, which also brought piercing value: 239 million.

I read that report as evidence that T2 Poakie can earn a slot, not proof that it beats the Monkey. The Monkey still won. It should have won by more, given the development gap. Poakie stayed relevant because its oil kept hitting a large number of targets while supporting the control plan.

The teammate's T3 Poakie gained a larger normal attack area and finished above the T2 version. That is the expected direction. T3 raises the ceiling, but the test does not tell me that T3 is mandatory before I try the combo.

T2 versus T3 in this specific build

Poakie's normal range changes sharply at T3. The T2 attack uses a compact T-shaped area. The T3 form expands into a three-lane AoE and uses a broad Gold Rush range similar to the Fire puppy line. After four hits, the frog also channels continuous flamethrower damage and applies Burn.

Those upgrades help, especially when enemies spread across several lanes. They do not replace the Lv.7 oil field. The oil is why I can bring a lower evolution Poakie into this Horde plan without asking it to behave like a full T3 carry.

I make the choice this way:

  • If I already own T3 Waveflutter and need a cheap Sleep trigger, I test T1 or T2 first.
  • If the oil loop works but normal attacks miss side lanes, I move toward T3.
  • If I also need Poakie for chapters and Gold Rush, T3 becomes easier to justify.
  • If my Horde team dies before Poakie reaches Lv.7, I fix survival and upgrade order before evolving.
  • If I lack Waveflutter or another reliable control engine, I do not build this exact combo yet.

Evolution and Horde upgrade level are separate decisions. I can own a T2 Poakie and still upgrade that unit to Lv.7 during the Horde run. Confusing those two systems is an expensive mistake. The account-level evolution changes the Tatari permanently. The Lv.3, Lv.5, and Lv.7 Horde skills come from temporary upgrades inside the mode.

The Horde upgrade order I use

Poakie's three visible Horde breakpoints each solve a different problem.

Lv.3 gives movement and team buffs

At Lv.3, Poakie can jump to a selected tile and grant nearby allies attack and damage boosts. Move the frog out and back to refresh or reposition the benefit.

I keep the movement short. I tap a tile that keeps my real damage cluster inside the buff area, then return Poakie to the forward position where its later skills can see enemies. Sending it on a sightseeing trip to the back corner wastes time and can leave its control zone facing empty ground.

I also watch for overlapping buffs. The test used Bat support and other damage boosts. If two buffs do not stack, I replace one support slot with Fragile, Weak, piercing damage, survival, or another effect that the team lacks. More buff icons are not automatically more damage.

Lv.5 adds a forward stun zone

At Lv.5, Poakie projects a wide sound effect toward the front. Enemies that enter it can be stunned. In my test, the boss was caught after stepping into the area.

This skill has a range requirement. When Poakie moved too far back, the sound field had nothing useful to hit. I place the frog near the front or one row behind it, then check whether the first boss walks into the visible zone. If the skill keeps firing into empty tiles, I move Poakie before blaming its damage.

The stun also helps the later oil setup. A stunned enemy spends more time on the tiles where I want Lava Oil to land. That is one more chance for Burn, Slow, and Waveflutter's Sleep to overlap.

Lv.7 turns the setup on

Lv.7 is the reason I bring Poakie. The broad oil field creates the repeated damage surface that drives the whole control loop. I prioritize reaching this breakpoint once the early board can survive without starving the main carry.

That does not mean I upgrade Poakie blindly while the rest of the team sits at Lv.1. If the frontline collapses at wave 12, saving for a clever Lv.7 trick will only produce a very sophisticated defeat. I raise enough survival and main damage to stabilize the board, then push Poakie to the oil breakpoint.

With two Poakies, two oil fields cover most of the approach and create near-continuous control. The setup also consumes two slots and more upgrades. Start with one. Add the second only when one field leaves a clear path that enemies keep using.

My formation blueprint

I build around jobs rather than copy every named Tatari from the test server. My formation used Waveflutter, Poakie, a Monkey carry, Fragile support, attack and damage buffs, piercing damage, and extra utility. One planned Fire support was unavailable, so I substituted Seal support instead. That tells me the shell has room to move.

My basic board needs:

  • Poakie near the front, positioned so its Lv.5 sound zone and Lv.7 oil cover the main route.
  • T3 Waveflutter close enough for Poakie's repeated hits to feed the Slow and Sleep setup.
  • One developed main carry that handles bosses after control holds them in place.
  • One damage amplifier, such as Fragile, Weak, or a support buff that does not duplicate an existing effect.
  • One survival or utility slot chosen for the first reason the run fails.

Tideon-style Fragile pressure can raise damage on trapped enemies. Sonarbat-style support can improve output when placed for the correct side. A piercing Deer or another ranged damage unit can punish lines of enemies stalled in the oil. I use the names I own, but I preserve those jobs.

The test formation also used a Seal replacement because the intended T3 Fire cat was missing. I like that detail. It proves I do not need a museum-perfect roster to test the core interaction. Poakie plus Waveflutter is the engine. The remaining slots decide whether the engine survives and whether it can kill the bosses it has trapped.

Placement and manual play

I put Poakie where enemies cannot avoid the oil. Center-front is the obvious first test because the heart-shaped field can touch several lanes. An edge tile can waste half the area unless that side receives nearly all the pressure.

Waveflutter must cover the units whose damage should trigger its effect. I do not isolate it just because it looks safe in the back. I move it until Poakie and at least one useful damage dealer can feed the setup.

During the run, I follow a simple rhythm:

  1. Stabilize the opening waves before chasing Poakie Lv.7.
  2. Use Poakie's Lv.3 movement to buff the real damage group.
  3. Return it to the front before the next dense wave arrives.
  4. Watch the first boss enter the Lv.5 sound zone.
  5. Place Lava Oil across the route, not behind enemies that have already passed.
  6. Save one adjustment for the lane that leaks first.

This build asks for some attention. Auto play can still produce value, but the movement buff and oil placement reward manual timing. I prefer to make four useful taps than spend another month building a unit whose only job is to stand there looking expensive.

Why I do not copy this into Gold Rush yet

The T3 Poakie range looks attractive in Gold Rush. It matches the broad shape of the Fire puppy line. The problem is what each unit contributes inside that range.

Poakie brings Burn. The puppy comparison brings AoE Weak plus damage, and Weak has obvious team value in Gold Rush. I had not completed a proper Gold Rush test, so keep the proven Weak unit until Poakie beats it in the same formation.

If I insist on testing Poakie there, I change one frontline slot and keep the rest of the attack formation stable. Then I compare total team damage, surviving units, and the report across several similar attacks. One lucky result is not a build.

Campaign, bosses, and Dojo also need more direct testing. The 969 Horde run proves a Horde interaction. It does not quietly certify Poakie for every mode while nobody is looking.

Common mistakes with this setup

The first mistake is evolving Poakie before testing the cheap version. If T1 or T2 can already reach Lv.7 and trigger the Sleep loop, I want that evidence before spending for T3.

The second mistake is putting Poakie too far back. Its sound zone and forward oil need enemies in range. A safe frog that never touches the pack is just a spectator with good food quality.

The third mistake is upgrading Poakie to Lv.7 while the frontline collapses. The oil cannot control enemies after the Tatarigami has already folded.

The fourth mistake is reading the damage table as a clean duel. Poakie received support buffs, attacked dense groups, and supplied control value that the report cannot show. The Monkey had higher development and still finished first.

The fifth mistake is stacking every available attack buff without checking whether effects overlap. I compare the live icons and damage result. If a second buff changes nothing, I bring a different debuff or a defensive tool.

The sixth mistake is promising myself a meta team because one run reached 969 kills. That score is good. It is also 46 short of 1,015. I can enjoy the build and keep the arithmetic honest.

My low-cost testing plan

I test this formation over three Horde sessions before spending permanent resources.

In the first session, I keep Poakie at its current evolution and focus on reaching Lv.7. I note where the first oil lands, which lanes remain uncovered, and whether Waveflutter's Sleep visibly interrupts enemies inside the field.

In the second session, I change only placement. I move Poakie one tile toward the leaking lane or move Waveflutter so the right allies sit inside its setup. I keep the rest of the team unchanged. If the score jumps, placement was the problem.

In the third session, I test one roster change. I replace a duplicate attack buff with Fragile, Weak, survival, or piercing damage. I compare the first failed wave, final score, Poakie's damage, and the main carry's damage.

After those sessions, I ask four questions:

  • Did Poakie reach Lv.7 reliably?
  • Did enemies remain in the oil long enough for repeated Sleep?
  • Did the team fail from damage, survival, or a lane that the oil missed?
  • Would T3's wider normal attack solve that exact failure?

If the last answer is yes, I consider T3. If the combo never starts because the team dies early, I invest elsewhere first.

Final recommendation

I keep Poakie on my Horde shortlist even at T1 or T2. The 969-kill test gives me a concrete reason: a D-quality T2 Poakie reached 261 million damage while helping create Slow, Stun, Burn, Sleep, and a large front-of-map control zone. It did not replace the stronger Monkey. It made the whole formation harder for enemies to walk through.

T3 is the upgrade for wider normal AoE and better personal output. It is not the entry ticket for the Lava Oil plan. Players with T3 Waveflutter and a thin Horde roster can test the cheaper Poakie first, reach Lv.7 during the run, and decide with their own score screen instead of spending on faith.

I call this a practical budget build with a real ceiling, not the new universal meta. That is enough. A low-investment frog that turns the front of the map into a sticky Sleep trap has already earned more respect than its food grade suggests.
